Foul Play

The Anti-Realist Anti-Politics of America's Un-Citizens

Feature Essay

“From the standpoint of those of us who do not support Trump, or who even despise him, the biggest and seemingly most puzzling question is: how can so many people really believe that Trump is not a narcissistic, faux-populist windbag and con artist?

What do I mean by Foul Play?

Trump supporters don’t just argue dishonestly; their engagement in civic discourse is a sham, and their conception of the Constitutional limits of executive power and privilege is both historically and legally spurious and selectively applied to the advantage of Donald Trump alone.  All of this put together is what I call: Foul Play.

“If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.” — David Frum, Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic
